The impact of the Braer oil spill on the macrobenthic infauna of the sediments off the Shetland Islands.
Authors - KINGSTON P. F. (1) ; DIXON I. M. T. ; HAMILTON S. ; COORE D. C.
Following the wreck of the oil tanker Braer, a study of the benthic fauna in areas of sea-bed contaminated
by oil was carried out. The results showed that no significant changes in benthic community structure, as
characterized by species richness, individual abundance and diversity could be related to the areas of
sea-bed affected by the Braer oil spill........

Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary - The Braer Story
On 5 January 1993 the event, which many had feared ever since the arrival of oil in Shetland, actually
happened. The tanker Braer, on her way from Norway to Canada, lost power during a gale in the Fair Isle
Channel and drifted onto rocks at the south end of Shetland. With 80,000 tonnes of oil spewing into the
sea, everyone expected an environmental catastrophe of monumental proportions........

THE IMPACT OF OIL SPILLS ON SEABIRDS
Much has been published on the effects of oil on seabirds, but the literature on the impact of oil spills on
seabird populations is not so extensive as one might expect. This list must be seen as a first attempt to
get an overview of published material. Any additions, or comments are welcomed. The key studies should
be identified and preferably be made available on the internet or otherwise for consultation as part of the
manuals written for future impact assessments. The first list contains general titles, the later lists address
specific spills within Europe.....
