About Shetland
Shetland (formerly Zetland from Old Norse) is an archipelago off the northeast coast of mainland Scotland.
The 100+ islands (15 of them inhabited), span 145 km (100 miles) between Fair Isle and Out Stack, the
northernmost point of Britain. The islands are 960 km (600 miles) north of London, 280 km (170 miles) from
the Faroe Islands and form part of the division between the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the North Sea
to the east. The total area is approximately 1,466 kmē (566 square miles). The islands' administrative centre
and only burgh is Lerwick. The largest island, known as "Mainland," has an area of 967 kmē (374 square
miles), making it the third-largest Scottish island and the fifth-largest of the British Isles. Shetland has 19
hours of midsummer daylight, 138 sandy beaches, 639 miles of roads, 900 miles of coastline, 6,080
archaeological sites, 22,000 people, 46,000 gannets and 200,000 puffins.
